Chapter Thirteen
I wake just as I fell asleep, with my body across Paxtonâs. A quick perusal of the room reveals we are no longer in Weretheaâs castle, but back in the hovel in the Olclag in our current time. Though I knew Pax and I couldnât stay in that moment forever, while we spent the night in each otherâs arms, I hoped.
Stifling a sigh, I untangle myself from Pax and stand.
He face is serene like he doesnât want me to know how heâs feeling, and I realize there is still so much I donât know about the fairy. Like how old is he really?
Paxton stands as well and pulls me into a side hug. âMy love,â he whispers, kissing my cheek.
Tingles run the length of my body as memories of our time together rush through me. âHi,â I say, glancing up at him.
âWhen we finally fell asleep,â he lifts an eyebrow and my face gets hot. âWerethea told me we need to go to the center of the Olclag and there we will find what we need to save the fairy realm.â
Profound sadness overwhelms me a moment and I wish he could remember our conversation with Werethea. About what has to happen. To me. And what he has to do. To me. As I search his eyes, itâs obvious he doesnât. Really, itâs for the best. At least for now. âGood,â I say, clearing my throat and rolling back my shoulders.
Merida and Tianaâs laughter filters over to us.
âI have itââ Pax begins but is interrupted.
âItâs about time you both woke,â Merida says coming out of the kitchen and pulling something from her pocket. âWhile you were asleep, that guy Troy appeared out of thin air and gave me this letter.â At the memory, I see her face react with surprise.
âHe came here?â I go to her and take the letter from her outstretched hand. âWhat do you mean?â I ask confused. âWhere is he?â I turn in a circle, searching the hut for a sign of him, but am disappointed.
âIt was weird. He wasnât here-here, but here enough to give me the letter.â Merida sounds crazy, but no crazier than what Paxton and I just went through.
âWhat did he want?â I glance out the dirty window at the dreary Olclag unsure about the time. It could be midnight or midday.
âHe didnât say anything. Just gave Mer the letter before he vanished.â Tiana wipes flour from her hands onto her yellow apron. âIt was bizarre and scared the crap out of me.â
âOf us,â Merida adds, tucking her hands into her back pockets.
âWhat does it say?â Pax leans in as I turn from the window and open the letter. There isnât much written in his handwriting.
Itâs super short and to the point. More a message than a letter.
Dearest Rory,
I havenât forgotten about you. Be courageous. Help is on the way!
Your Friend,
Troy
I canât help but smile. What Troy wrote isnât urgent or even necessary, but itâs exactly what I need to hear. Warmth tingles through my body.
